About Us

Trees and Timber is a forest management company run by Duncan Winton, based in North Pembrokeshire. We act as both forestry contractors and consultants. Over the years we have worked on a real diversity of forestry operations including all aspects of woodland establishment up to respacing, coppicing, motor-manual harvesting, halo thinning large coupes in ancient woodland in preparation for the reintroduction of grazing around veteran trees, heathland restoration, tree safety, arboricultural contracting, and general woodland and estate maintenance activities. We have provided contract services to the private sector, to Forestry England and NRW, and operated a firewood and coppice product supply business. We can also provide forest management consultancy to clients, with a particular focus on Continuous Cover Forestry and irregular silviculture. Duncan is registered with the Welsh Government as a woodland planner and can produce woodland creation plans for submission to Rural Payments Wales. We have public and employers’ liability insurance and professional indemnity.

Duncan’s interest in managing trees and woodlands began in 2008 after a period working for a hedgelayer and tree surgeon in the Blackdown hills in Somerset. After getting chainsaw qualifications and he spent 2 years working alongside and apprenticing to Anthony Waters of Heartwood Creations – a highly regarded woodsman based at Pentiddy Woods on the edge of Bodmin Moor. The apprenticeship at Pentiddy covered a broad spectrum of work and provided a sound grounding in many aspects of woodland and countryside management. For several years after that Duncan worked in and around Bristol where he started off specialising in low-impact sensitive management of predominantly broadleaf woodlands and coppice. His work became increasingly diverse with a strong focus on tree planting and woodland establishment.

Duncan is an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters and a member of Confor and the Royal Forestry Society. He was a founding member of the Avon and South Cotswolds Coppice Group affiliated to the National Coppice Federation.
